When can I access my hosting account?

Custom Web Hosting will have your account up within 15 minutes to 24 hours, depending on how long it takes for the domain name to propagate. You will receive an email once your account has been set up. The email you receive will contain all the necessary login information.

How do I transfer my domain name to Custom Web Hosting?

Our support team will complete the transfer for you. If you wish.

Otherwise you can initiate the process by logging into your domain registrar account and redirecting your name server to point to our name server (you will receive name server and hosting details via email)
 

If you are unable to change your domain or have no technical knowledge of how to do so, please contact our support team and we will get it done on your behalf. Once the name sever has been redirected, your domain name would be able to retrieve data from our server within 2-24 hours.

How long until I can use my hosting account?

New domain names and changes to domain names may take up to 2-8 hours for .COM and .NET domains and up to 24-48 hours for all other domain extensions to propagate and resolve.
This is due to the number of networks involved, and the fact that those networks are controlled by several different agencies. This delay applies to all domains and all Registrars. Please allow for this delay when planning Web sites or configuring a domain to work with your email.

Data Storage and Bandwidth

Data storage - the space your Website will require on a server's hard drive, ranges from small sites with 10 megabytes of storage space to large business sites that require 250 MB or more.
Data transfer - also called "bandwidth," refers to the amount of data sent over the network each month in response to visitor's requests. This varies depending on the size of your Web pages and the number of visitors to your site. A 50-kilobyte home page that is viewed by 20,000 visitors each month will use one gigabyte of data transfer per month (50,000 bytes x 20,000 hits = 1 billion bytes, or one gigabyte). Custom Web Hosting offers generous amounts of disk space for each Web Hosting Plan, for you to use to store your web site. You can use your web-based control panel (cPanel) to monitor the amount of disk space you are using, and how much disk space is currently available on your hosting account.

What is Web Hosting?

A Web hosting business begins with a collection of Web servers, powerful computers stored in secure and climate-controlled environments and permanently linked to the Internet through high-speed data lines. These computers store the Web pages that make up your website. You can send your Web pages to the host's server using a Web browser interface or a dial-in connection and FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Can I upgrade/downgrade my hosting plan any time?

Yes, you can upgrade/downgrade your account to a similar product e.g. Starter Plan to Business Plan, automatically via your My Account. There are no upgrade fees or additional charges to upgrade. You will be charged the difference in Plan price only, calculated by our billing system. There is a AU$12.00 administration fee to downgrade to a lower Plan.

You can manage your Domain Name, email and FTP services, password protect directories, and much, much more through our intuitive, web-based control panel (cPanel). Through the control panel we also provide comprehensive documentation and useful resources to help you administer your Web site.

Microsoft FrontPage Extensions?

We provide Microsoft FrontPage extensions free of charge with all our hosting Plans.
However they are only of any use if you actually use Microsoft FrontPage to create, edit, and maintain your website.
FrontPage extensions can be turned on and off at any time via your cPanel.
Note: Please read "What is .htaccess" below. Before turning off the extensions.

Private CGI-BIN - Can I run these scripts?

Yes - This feature allows you to run your own PERL scripts and executables.
All our hosting packages come with their own cgi-bin. You can upload your own scripts.

Password Protected Directories.....

This allows you to password protect an unlimited number of directories so that only people who have the username and password to access the directory are able to do so. This is controlled via cPanel. See the Knowledge Base for setup details.

What are Server Side Includes?

Server Side Includes allow you to insert files into your HTML pages on the server side. This means SSI isn't dependant on the clients browser. SSI is required by many scripts and can also save you hundreds of hours in web site maintenance by allowing you to edit just one page that has its content embedded throughout your site, effecting a change globally and avoiding having to edit each page one by one.
Lets say that at the bottom of each page of your web site you have your contact phone number. If you have a 20 page web site and your phone number changes then you have to change 20 Pages. But if that section of your site is called via an SSI then all you do is change one file and all pages are changed.

PHP Scripting Language

PHP is a server-side, cross-platform, HTML embedded scripting language. The latest version is PHP5. We offer both PHP4 & PHP5 which are the current versions on all our hosting packages.

What is a web user and how do I create one?

A web user is an account (sub-domain) that has it's own web space that is separate from the main site. It can be accessed via http://www.yourdomain.com/~user or http://user.yourdomain.com/

What is FTP?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it is the process used to upload and download files from a web server.
This is done using an FTP program. See the Knowledge Base on how to setup your FTP.

What is .htaccess?

.htaccess files allow you to customize the way that your site or a specific directory on your site behaves. For example, if you place an .htaccess file in your root directory, it will affect your entire site (www.coolexample.com). If you place it in a /content directory, it will only affect that directory (www.coolexample.com/content).

How Do I Create Custom Error Pages?

How do I transfer my site to you?

First you would get a new account with us - and then transfer all of your website files. Once that is done, you would need to update your domain name's DNS/ nameservers (with the company that registered your domain). That's all there is to it. After your domain is completely pointing to your new hosting account, you could then safely cancel your old host. See more info in the Knowledge Base
